Artist Statement

In my portfolio you will find the personality of Kaylim Noel mixed with a taste of Ms. Cook’s direction. What I meant by this is that my pictures or images in my portfolio expressed my feelings or ideas about several different categories. My images also express my personality and how I am as a person. When you see my artwork you can automatically or assume that it was my creation. I’ve learned to make creative work you have to really think out the box or leave your normal element. You nearly have to be uncomfortable or something has to feel incorrect and strange almost to be creative.
I learned how to look at things from a different perspective. I also learned something very small such as a setting or control, angle of which a picture was took, or lighting can drastically change the mood or overall feel of an image. I feel my creativity was my best attribute of this whole process of creating interesting images. I tried to be different from everyone else and do my own individual thing in this class. I feel that my weakness in my portfolio of images was enhancing my pictures by using Photoshop.
My pictures were good but my lack of Photoshop skills hampered my pictures from becoming great images. Also if I had better skills with all the camera settings and the different features I would have improved my overall body of work in my portfolio. I was influenced by my teacher ms. Cook. I say this because she taught me how to think out the box. I improved the most in the area of how to take good pictures. I learned that angles and positioning can really play a major role how a picture looks or the way you want to be portrayed. I would like say that this was my favorite class and I could really express myself and I looked forward coming to this class because my teacher made it a fun atmosphere.

Self Portraits

In all my pictures I really tried to focus on being creative and original. I wanted to have fresh pictures and photos very different from the ones I have taken all year. I think brainstorming really helped me out in terms of coming up with new ideas. Also looking at several books with self portraits help me get a better understanding on what I wanted to do in my own images. I think my most creative portrait is the photo with me up under a table. I look hidden and it adds mystique to my picture and makes it interesting.
I think I did a fair job with the composition of my photos. The composition of these particular photo was very vital because the pictures where desaturated and didn’t have color. You needed to really think about color schemes and how strong contrast would be in the shade or in the sun. Also the clothes you wore played a big factor in the different color shades. My strongest composition image was the one with me in front on the Chavez Pegasus. It looked as if I was changing into the horse with wings growing out my back. Also I had a white shirt on so there was a contrast from my clothing to the wall behind the Pegasus. The composition of the images also added to the creativity of the pictures.
The craftsmanship off my pictures was good. None of my images were blurry or unclear. I did a good job of positioning and angles on which I took my photos. I think my lack of understanding the shutter speed and iso control settings held me back a little in the area of craftsmanship. It would have help me have better lighting and better color ways of black, grey, and white. Overall I think my craftsmanship was pretty good. I could have done better with a better grasps of the camera controls and settings.
My portraits were good, not great, overall. My creativity of my portraits was good and was my strongest attribute. My craftsmanship was my weakest part of this whole project. I really liked this assignment because it allowed us to express ourselves. My favorite portrait was the one of me changing in the Pegasus because it was the most creative. I didn’t like my prop picture because I didn’t know what prop to use and how to express how the that the prop was special to me or had a special meaning.

shutter speed

The shutter speed allowed how much light the photo had. Also the shutter speed deals with the motion or action in the picture. It takes out the blur and makes the image clear. The shutter speed is represented in fractions of a second. You could use the shutter mood to manipulate the shutter's speed. In my photos i should have made the shutter speed longer. I didnt allow enough light to get in so my images appear dark. I did a got job of making my images clear without blur.

iso

The iso setting also controled how much light your picture contained. The iso setting is similar to the meter control, but the iso creates light when there isn't any light at all. The meter control just puts an emphasis on light that's already present in the photo.

Light metering

In this project we where learning the functions of the new cameras. The different settings can be confusing at frst but once you earn them or master the use of them it will be very helpful to you. The light metering to is used to conrtol the volume or amount of light that is seen in a image. In this photos we metered each picture by pressing the capture button halfway while approaching the computer screen. Then, we backed up and snapped the photo.

Personal Metaphor

Metaphor

I chose to compare my self as a Gatorade. I turned my torso into a Gatorade bottle with the grape liquid showing. I chose to say I am Gatorade because at that moment and time I felt cool and refreshed. I felt this way because I was fresh off the basketball season, which can cause a lot of stress, so when it was over I felt a lot of weight lifted off my shoulders. I felt that when the season was over I could just have fun and do other things besides focusing all my time and effort on basketball. The mood I tried to express was a laid back or complacent mood. Also I wanted my demeanor to cool because a Gatorade beverage is usually served when it’s cold.

My composition was done pretty well. I chose to use my background to show a strong contrast between my background and the metaphor. My background was in a hot desert looking area with the sun really shining. I chose this because my metaphor was me changing my self in a Gatorade so, the background meant I needed to stay cool and refreshed in the hot sun. My focal point of my composition was my torso. My torso is where I changed my self into liquid Gatorade. It’s strong because it grabs the attention of the person looking at the picture. I don’t think my picture had very good balance but it was decent. My picture feels somewhat in my opinion. I believe it depends on the person’s point of view observing the image.Metaphor

I think my creativity was the best attribute of my image. I believe this because people don’t compare themselves to sports drinks everyday. It was difficult changing or expressing my self as Gatorade and becoming the bottle. I could have changed my background and made it relate to my metaphor better. Also I could have worked harder in photo shop and extra effort. I wouldn’t really change anything but I would just enhance my image as a whole.

Aesthetic experience

As the color was added to the water i thought about change. Also i thought about how things so pure can become dirty and unpure and full of negative things. As more colors were addded, all color faded to create a pitch black liquid. I believed this occuring represented all the color and life being taken out of someone and becoming dark and evil.

chocolate frog

for valentines day we turned frogs into chocolate. I thought this project was creative and different. I couldn't wait to see what other tools we would use to make the frog look authentic. I learned how highlights and shadows make these pop out and come to life.

Shadows and reflections

In these exercises we learned how to create shadows and reflections to help us make more realistic artwork. A new tool we learned was layer masks. The things we learneded here can help me in the future by givin me another tool or method to enhance my artistic creations.

egg challenge

In this project we had to take a picture and incorporate one or all the three c's. The three c's are compostion, creativity, and color. We had to photograph an egg. We could also be in the image if we wanted to. I liked my black and why picture more than my colored picture. I liked the concept, which was golfing, and also the creativity of my photograph.

aged photo

In this project we used one of our frame photographs to practice using photoshop to create specific effects.

balance with frames

In this project we were given a frame. We had to use it in our compostion. We also had to be in our photo, but not in the center. It was to be in black and white, and we needed to create a sense of visual balance. I created balance by setting two frames up against fence. One was in front of me and the other frame was hanging on the right side of the fence.

random object

We were each assigned a random object that we had to photograph. We could choose to have it in color or black and white. We were to focus on ''the three C's''

One thing I did well was good composition. I believe this because the object was isolated from everything else in the picture. Also there was a bright light that was captured in my picture and it added energy to my picture. I could have improved my picture by zooming out and adding more depth to my picture.

my favorite project from last semester.

This is an image that shows what affects me in today's society. This is a social issue and i used the picture to depict racial descrimination by law enforcement. I liked this assignment because i really could express my self and my voice could be heard.
